with over ten years production experience, the proverbial bar of expectations has been set high for smash tv aka holger zilske and kai preussner and their forthcoming release steroids to heaven. first up on this celebrated ep is steroids to heaven, a glitchy tech house number with an astonishingly catchy bassline, reticulated with a mass of synthesized effects and an intriguing vocal sample. pitched drums and a grooving, energetic bassline conspire with one another in made for eachother driving the track forward alongside a sliced vocal sample which, after a beautifully housy breakdown, is given its full debut. judging from this fine release, smash tv is still in top form, ready and able to set the bar of expectations even higher for 2011.

0-visionen are kristofer ulfves and olof liliengren, two friends with a shared love of the organic sounds and the art of using analogue gear live. warm melodic electronica is blended with the harsher digital sound of murky techno into a something truely unique. 0-visionen have performed live numerous times at swedish electronica festivals and clubs ever since 2007 and now their new ep >noll< is here to set new standards. noll contains tracks that vary from analogue sequences to shuffled idm style beats with that special 0-visionen spice.

neapolitan techno powerhouse unrilis delivers a brand new ep from gaetano parisio in the form of needing chords. up there with the likes of adam beyer, ben sims and marco carola as one of the premier exponents of european techno, parisios reputation is backed up by an enviable discography and touring schedule. needing chords, backed by a remix from another neapolitan legend in rino cerrone, is a heavy-set, muscular techno-workout which builds with unbridled intensity. cerrones remix is considerably more stripped but loses none of the originals power. moodier and with a sinister edge, its an interpretation which provides an exciting slant on the original. the skippy funk of fake stuff follows and does so with a playful urgency. threaded with a snaking white noise motif that ebbs and flows under staccato keys, its hugely hypnotic while not loosing its groove. finally, its the trippy synths of program meanings that close the ep. heavily layered the track constantly and fluidly shifts with filters revealing new combinations of layers throughout while a funk licked bassline and heavy drums do the rest. hope the usa tour was fun!

miles whittaker has been an integral part of the modern love label since its inception in 2002 - as one half of both pendle coven and demdike stare, as well as his own productions under the mlz and millie monikers. after almost 15 years writing music, this is the first release miles is putting out under his own name and marks a turning point of sorts in his production style, or rather, in its sequencing. the facets ep brings together different ends of his production style, unifying elements of the house and techno he s most commonly released as mlz together with the more broken production signatures usually reserved for millie and the darkened tribalism of demdike stare. flawed opens the set with a linn loop from the archives, stretched and slowed down with an intoxicated aesthetic that s somewhere between house and dub, before lustre re-configures source material originally keyed in by labelmate andy stott with a nice line in squashed percussion. primer on the flip extends from a demdike stare outtake and veers off into an analogue drum machine workout, before on the fly ends the set with a recording made straight to mixing desk from an array of mis-wired and malfunctioning drum boxes, contact microphones and samplers, over at his studio the mill earlier this year.
